What is marriage? A pretty good question for these days and times. I did a search for the history of marriage and got this back. It seems that how a marriage is arranged and preformed has changed over the years and is different, depending on the culture and society where the marriage is being preformed. What hasn't changed is that it's a commitement between two people.

"Many people hold the view that regardless of how people enter into matrimony, marriage is a bond between two people that involves responsibility and legalities, as well as commitment and challenge. That concept of marriage hasn't changed through the ages."

So I see in the news today that Pope John Paul II is blasting Canada's acceptance of gay marriages...saying that it would "create a false understanding of marriage". How are two guys or gals wanting to spend their life together, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, till death do them part, going to create a "false understanding of marriage"?

I never really thought that marriage works. According to the 2001 US statistics there were 2,327,000 marriages preformed. The marriage rate is 8.4 per 1000 people. The divorce rate is 4.0 per 1000 people. That means almost half of those 2,327,000 people got divorced! It's not really hard to understand realy, I mean, just look at marriages like J.Lo's. She has been married three times; Ojani Onoa for 21 months, Cris Judd for a year and now with singer Marc Anthony. This doesn't include the on again, off again marriage plans she had with Ben Affleck. How long do you think this marriage is going to last?

Speaking of short lived marriages...let's look at Britney Spears'? She was married to Jason Allen Alexander for 55 hours. The story goes that they got married for the hell of it and later had it annulled because she didn't understand what her actions meant. Now she's engaged to Kevin Federline. Does she understand what marriage is now?

I mean WTF right? It seems like the Pope is living in his own reality if he can't see what's happening. There are couples that are devoted to each other, but all the Pope sees is that they are the same gender. He doesn't really care about the meaning of marriage, because if he did, he would do something about all the J.Lo's and Britney Spears in the world. People like that, are what is making marriage a mockery.
