"Ted", The Corpse Flower

"Ted", The Corpse Flower 1, originally uploaded by AiYahh.

The Corpse Flower known as "Ted" has been loaned to the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers by UC Davis where it usually lives.

Now, what da heck is a "corpse flower"? you may ask. Well, it's a flower obviously, this one to be exact. It's special because it only blooms once every few years...unlike most other flowers. Now, here's the kicker... when it finally decides to bloom, it smells like a dead corpse!

In order to keep the smell going as long as possible, these flowers have to be separated from one another. The presence of another corpse flower when it blooms ends the smell, because pollenation stops it.

Stkyrice and my friend "Ted" (no relation to the flower) decided to pay "Ted" the flower a visit and was able to snap these pictures before and after it bloomed. According to them, it doesn't smell like a dead corpse...just like really dirty socks.

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Beautiful flower
who smells like my dirty socks?
Have we met before?

I saw coverage about that thing in the news. I think we had one bloom last year in Pasadena.

Did you go on the day it was stinkiest?

Stkyrice and Ted was there on the day before it bloomed...hoping to see it bloom.

They found out "Ted" bloomed the night after they left and went the very next day. So they were able to get a "first day's" worth of sniffing done.

And yes... "Ted" smells like my dirty gym socks!
